lawn SERVICES
installing a new lawn from turf produces an instantly attractive result.
our lawn installations are offered from autumn to early spring, in suitable weather.
we always follow best-practice to the letter and observe the principles of careful planning and preparation.
we also apply pre-turf lawn seed granules (often skipped by other installers), which contain slow release nutrients to promote healthy root development and encourages strong/rapid growth.
lawn disclaimer
unfortunately, we do not offer warranties on lawn installs, for the simple reason that we have little to no control over factors that can determine what happens after we have provided a green, healthy lawn.
These factors include under-watering, over-watering, soil compaction, sunlight deprivation and pets or disease - see below for more information.
lawn aftercare
As soon as your new lawn has been laid be sure to water it well.
You should water the turf for a considerable amount of time, this first watering is one of the most important ones.
The water should soak through to the ground below.
Water your new turf daily for the first two weeks or so
If the weather is warm when your new turf is laid you may need to water your turf daily for up to a month if you've laid your new lawn during a warm summer.
during average temperatures in the UK, watering daily may not be necessary.
To know when you need to water your new turf check the underside of it, it should be moist all the time for about a month after it has been laid.
after this point you can reduce the amount of watering. Wind, heat and lack of rainfall will dry out the turf faster than normal, so more watering may be required.
Avoid over-watering
Be careful not to over-water your turf as this can encourage lawn disease.
Lift up a corner of the turf and check its underside – it should be moist and dark, but not sopping wet.
over-watering a new lawn can also hinder root establishment and lead to waterlogged soil, suffocating the roots and preventing them from properly anchoring into the ground.
This can result in a weak, shallow root system, making the lawn more susceptible to diseases, pests, and drought stress.
Do not walk on your new turf until its roots have bedded into the soil
It can take a number of weeks for the roots to bed into the soil. You will know when the roots have rooted as you will not be able to lift up a corner of your new turf easily.
If your new turf has been laid on a slope, it can take longer to root in, so stay off it a little longer – perhaps six weeks or so to be safe.
consider Improve drainage by aerating the lawn to improve airflow and drainage.
Wait a few weeks before mowing your new turf
When you mow your new lawn for the first time, be sure to set your mower to one of its highest cutting settings.
When mowing in the Autumn and early Spring, it is best to use one of the highest cutting settings on your mower anyway.
Fertilise your lawn a couple of times a year to help keep it healthy
Most people fertilise (treat) their lawn in the Spring and Autumn. Our team have some great products for this job.
Pests and Diseases
Toadstools - Common in warm and damp conditions on newly laid turf and established lawns. Do not eat
toadstools as they could well be poisonous.
The best way of removing them is to use a mower with a grass box attached and cut the grass as you usually would. Although toadstools are unsightly they will not harm the grass.
Chaffer Grubs
Chaffer Grubs are the larvae of Chaffer Beetles, They can feed on the roots of grasses causing lawn problems.
Damage to lawns is most obvious between autumn and spring when the grubs are reaching maturity.
They have stout white bodies curved in a C shape, light brown heads and three pairs of legs at the head end.
Leather Jackets
Leather Jacket grubs are the larvae of daddy long legs/crane flies. Female adults lay eggs in late summer which quickly hatch into leather jackets. They then live underground over the winter and spring period, before hatching and flying away as new crane flies.
Leather Jackets feed mainly on the roots of the turf, which causes the grass to have stunted growth and brown patches. Most damage occurs during spring. Leather Jackets have elongated tubular bodies, are greyish/brown in colour and have no obvious head or legs.
Effective chemical control for Leather Jackets and Chaffer grubs has been banned for both for turf growers and domestic customers, it is therefore likely new turf may contain larvae, which can be picked off and humanely destroyed or released away from your new turf, or to control biologically you can purchase nematodes from any good garden centre to help in the combat these lawn pests.
